Whom We Suspect
Subjects are unknown.
They are possibly daughters of a sibling of Charlie or Minnie, but could be anyone.
Identification: none.
About the Photo
Photo taken by Johnson Portraits, 223 E. Main St., Jackson, Michigan.
Date: Unknown
No handwriting, or identification other than photographer information, was on the front or back of this photograph. The photographer's Negative No. is, unfortunately, missing or is totally faded, and, if ever present, may have been trimmed off.
Original photo is typical of those taken in the late 1800's and early 1900's and was trimmed (possibly to fit into an old-type photo album).
This photo is the cabinet type (pasted to thick cardboard).
What Else We Know
The photographer's Jackson location indicates these two young females were in that area of Michigan at the time of this photo.
Charles Hinton's obituary and funeral documents state he moved away from Jackson, Michigan, in 1901. Charles and Minnie, and their 3 daughters, are found on the 1900 Jackson City, Jackson County, Michigan census.
Stella Ann Hinton, Charles and Minnie's third child and youngest daughter, was born April 26, 1900 in Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan. (I include the following in hopes of finding descendants of Stella Ann Hinton Loucks)
Stella Hinton married April 24, 1916 in Boise, Ada Co., Idaho, Fred Raymond Loucks. The couple had four sons, Albert, Alden, Byron, and Fred. Albert and Alden died when young, and Fred died in 1943. Byron Loucks died July 27, 1995 in Boise, Ada Co., Idaho. His 1995 obituary mentions he was survived by two sons, Fred Loucks of Washington, and Byron Loucks of Oklahoma.
Our Reasoning
Since Charles and Minnie lived in Jackson, Michigan, it's very possible that one or both of them had other family in the Jackson area.
We suspect the girls in this photo are descendants of the lost Hinton clan, though they could be from any of our families.
IGI/North America also lists 2 Hinton girls, daughters of James Henry Hinton and Martha Ann Moore, that we are 99% sure are related: Hazel Salina Hinton, age 20 in 1907 and Fern Elisabeth Hinton, age 20 in 1915, both married in Iosco County, MI, each to a husband with the last name of Schreiber or Schrieber who are both listed as sons of John Schreiber, Sr. (or Johann Schreiber) and Susanna Grenke (or Susanna Grinkey).
Comments
Charles Oliver Hinton said he was one of 9 sons. It is believed his parents immigrated through Canada to the USA.
According to Charles Hinton's funeral preparation documents (informant blank), his parents were James Hinton born in England and Samanthy Oneal born in Ireland.
09/24/2002 update: Conflicting names of parents found:
1900 census records indicate that Canada (not Ireland) may be the birth place of the mother, surname: O'Neal or O Neil, given name: Samanthy, Samantha, Selma, Salina, Celina, or Selvia.
As there is question regarding the immigrant parents' legal given names, it is possible we were told the "familiar names" or middle names for this couple and some of their 9 sons.
The sons' names (as we were told) are:1900 Michigan census records show 5 Hinton families which may be ours, 2 are definitely ours (Charles and Minnie, and Arthur and Lillie). We are 99% sure the James Henry Hinton b. July 1860 in NY, wife Martha and 2 daughters Hazel and Fern, found living next door to Arthur and Lillie Hinton in Tawas, Michigan, is our James. Strongly probable are also a William Hinton born Nov. 1853 in NY, and an Allen B. or Albert Hinton born ????? in NY.
Our search is in an early stage, so, naturally, we hope to find more traces of our family. Please visit the link below. You may recognize a name or face that would help us in our research.
